With 6 Weeks Left in WNBA Regular Season, It’s a 3-Team Race to the Finals

The 2023 WNBA season is nearing the 3/4-season mark, but the league is as lopsided as its ever been. After three months of learning who’s who, we’re just two weeks from the trade deadline (Aug. 7) and six weeks from the playoffs. The Aces (W6), Liberty (W4), and Sun (W3) are the top three teams, and they’re all riding win streaks after the all-star break. That trio stands head and shoulders above the rest of the league as the postseason approaches. And while the Aces have their sights set on a repeat, the new-look Liberty is starting to put the pieces together. Let’s take a look at the playoff picture with 15 games to play.

9. Sparks (8-15)

10. Mercury (6-17)

11. Fever (6-17)

12. Storm (4-19)

Aces in Turmoil: The Aces have been the dominant force in the WNBA throughout the season, and the defending champs have only lost twice all year. However, Candace Parker recently hit the IL with foot surgery and Riquna Williams is facing domestic battery charges. Las Vegas still has the Big 4 in tact — A’ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, and Chelsea Gray.

Liberty Lift-Off: While the Aces are the team to beat and the Sun is still loaded, the new-look Liberty have started to find their groove. New York is 12-3 in their last 15 games, and they’ve beaten the Sun in both head-to-head meetings this season. Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart are a dangerous 1-2 punch while Jonquel Jones and Courtney Vandersloot make this team unstoppable when they all play to their potential.
